The Society is founded on an integrated approach that brings together ocean law and governance, while bridging the fields of social sciences in ocean law and policy and natural sciences related to the ocean. We seek to narrow the gap between science and policy, contribute through academic research to national ocean governance, align Taiwan with international institutional developments, and respond to the current and emerging ocean challenges facing Taiwan.
The Society’s core objective is to advance institutional development in the fields of ocean law, policy, and governance, while promoting interdisciplinary integration and research to address current and future ocean challenges.

Founding Vision

The Society was established to bring together and amplify the voice of academia, raise public awareness of ocean law and policy, ocean governance, and interdisciplinary ocean issues, and advance Taiwan’s development in these fields.
The Society’s full English name is Taiwan Society for Ocean Law, Policy and Governance, abbreviated as TS-OLPAG. The prefix “TS” represents “Taiwan Society,” while “OLPAG” is inspired by the idea of “all-inclusive” and conveys the concept of embracing the diversity of the ocean and bringing together knowledge and expertise from across fields.
The Society welcomes scholars, researchers, and practitioners from all disciplines related to ocean law, policy, and governance, including ocean law and policy, marine natural sciences and engineering, ocean education, and interdisciplinary ocean research and practice. By bringing together diverse expertise, the Society seeks to build a comprehensive and integrated academic community dedicated to ocean law, policy, and governance, and to contribute collectively to Taiwan’s ocean governance.
The Society’s visual identity is centered on the Chinese character 「海」, representing the sea itself. Simple yet distinctive, the logo expresses the Society’s central vision and essence: advancing ocean scholarship and strengthening ocean governance.
Purpose
The Society is a legally established, non-profit academic and public-interest organization dedicated to advancing research and development in ocean law, ocean policy, ocean governance, and interdisciplinary ocean-related fields.
Its purpose is to promote the development of national legal and institutional frameworks for ocean law, policy, and governance, as well as to advance interdisciplinary integration and research concerning the ocean.
